Born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia, Jeff Calhoun remained local to work full time while attending Old Dominion University (ODU) also full time. In 1987, Jeff graduated from ODU with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with the equivalent of two majors: accounting and economics.
Jeff got a job at a small, boutique firm in Virginia Beach. The firm was run by two brothers who were both former IRS Agents – one in the Criminal Division. Jeff spent the next two years learning everything he could about corporate and partnership taxes, IRS audit tactics and how to work within them, and syndication of real estate limited partnerships.
By 1989, Jeff was running the firm and had a commitment to become full partner. However, given the impacts of The Tax Reform Act of 1986, Jeff saw trouble ahead for the investment vehicles they were forming. So, taking a risk, Jeff accepted a one-year contract to audit business taxes in the Norfolk, Virginia territory. Within just a few months, Jeff and his audit team had assessed and collected so much money that the program was made permanent and expanded. Jeff was named leader of the team. After 6 years, Jeff saw the need to expand his knowledge base into technology and ultimately to own his own firm.
In 1991, Jeff successfully completed the CPA exam and opened his practice. Over the years, the firm steadily grew. In 1994, Jeff took on a partner and purchased a retiring CPA’s business in Chesapeake, Virginia. The firm was named Calhoun Melchers, PC until 1997 when it reorganized.
Jeff continued to grow the firm all while training in Oracle Financials products, particularly as they apply to Federal military and intelligence agencies. In addition, Jeff received Top Secret, TS SCI, and Secret security clearances. The projects he worked on are confidential, however, he spent most of his time in Washington DC or various government facilities and military bases. Eventually, Jeff founded multiple small government contracting companies from 2006 to 2012.
As Jeff’s CPA firm matured, it grew into a real estate focused firm serving multiple investors, builders, developers, lenders, and brokers. Jeff saw the close relationship between business owners and their personal goals, investments, and retirement plans. Furthermore, several clients asked Jeff if he would ever go into the investment business. So, in 2004/2005, Jeff obtained his license for providing financial services. Jeff teamed up with a career CFP to form their own Registered Investment Advisory (RIA). After a few years, Jeff sold his interest in the RIA to focus on opportunities in tax and government contracting.
By 2019, when most 30-year accounting practitioners are planning their retirement, Jeff took another risk. He exited the government contracting business to focus on tax and financial services. Jeff saw the blending of taxes, financial matters, and personal plans as the “converging” of all things financial. In 2024, Jeff affiliated with Coastal Virginia Wealth Group.
